March 24, 206 - Revolution Hall, Portland, Oregon


I'll be honest, this one was personal. No Closer to Heaven is the record that got me into The Wonder Years, and it's still my favorite album they've made. So when the opportunity came up to drive to Portland and photograph them playing it in full for the ten-year anniversary, I didn't think twice.


Initiate

Southern California hardcore band Initiate opened the night and immediately made everyone pay attention. Fronted by Crystal Pak - "one of the most commanding vocalists in hardcore right now" - the band hit the stage with serious urgency. Pak is the kind of performer your lens gravitates toward naturally: all controlled fury and genuine presence. A perfect way to kick off the night. I am a fan for sure now!!


Knuckle Puck

Chicago pop-punk staples Knuckle Puck followed and did exactly what they do best and made a room full of people completely lose it. Their set was tight, loud, and relentless, and by the time they wrapped up, Revolution Hall was fully alive. Great band, great set, and a brutally fun challenge to shoot in fast-moving light.


The Wonder Years

Then came the main event. Playing No Closer to Heaven front to back, The Wonder Years gave that album the room it deserves. A decade later, it hits just as hard. Grief, loss, doubt, and the impossible task of making sense of the world, all wrapped up in some of the best pop-punk songwriting of the last twenty years.


I was not prepared for how emotional it would get. When they played "Cigarettes & Saints," I was right there with everyone else tears running, singing every word at the top of my lungs, the only difference is I had a camera in my hand. That song just does something to people, and in that room, surrounded by a few hundred folks who clearly felt the same way about this record, it was a lot. In the best possible way.


After the full album the band played a second set pulling from across their catalog. A great reminder of how much ground they've covered and how good they still are at all of it.
